Hmm Olli, I also think that's it's pretty wrong to modify your car on what's cool right now or what's moving in the VW scene. What if the low dudes go pink with chromed rims? Wink Just keep in mind that it doesn't matter, because it won't be a top shelf custom anyway.

Hey Groovy, If you are spraying with a compressor then a metallic is just one more coat to spray. First the silver base and then the clear. The only thing is that for a metallic, the surface has to be smoother than for a non-metallic (DG) because a basecoat is thinner and wil not fill out scratches or imperfections.

A good way to make a surface suitable for a metallic paintjob is to first spray the car with a filler-primer. That's thick and will cover small imperfections. You can spray it wet on wet if you can or spray the filler primer, let dry, wetsand it with 600 and 1000 grit paper and then spray the base.

As for the scallops: with this it is very important that you get the proportions right. There is a lot of measuring before you tape off the design. Take a look at Olli's example: you can see that not all points are the same width and the distance between the points is also not the same. This makes it look stupid. Another consideration with scallops is how you fill the surface. Three large scallops on the side of a big car look silly, as do six small ones on a car with low sides. Try to find a balance in that.

The outline is a very important part of scallops. You can correct small mistakes with it and it really finishes off the paintjob. Try to choose a colour that really contrasts with both the scallops colour and the colour of the car. In this case, a bright blue would show off good next to black and silver.

Here's some examples of scallop paintjobs.

There's plenty more good scallop-styles from 50's, 60's and 70's before the neon colours of the 80's took over.

The only 3 tips I can give you while the body is off the chassis:
1: rustproofing
2: rustproofing
3: rustproofing

Any welding, cutting away rust and replacing bodypanels should be done now, while you can reach it easily. Also, I see some old welding patches. Be sure to give welds extra attention: coat with zinc spray immediately after welding, close seams with kit and inspect old welds!

Well it is a very common spot on dutch and english 2cv really, both my 2CVs had it, but the AZ (from France) doesn't. Something to do with the weather I suppose...

Keep up the good work Groovy and Bjorn!
