|
|
Hey,
I would like to introduce my latest bicycle project what I started last week.
Its replica of late 1800 century bicycle which have been called whit names
as: Penny Farthing (small and huge coin), Boneshaker (more used of
even more old bikes), High wheeler (also hi wheeler) and Ordinary.
I have been dreaming to make bike like this for a LONG, and I know
dreams dont come true if I dont work on them, so now I feel tham I did
have enough skills to machine everyting. Few weeks ago I get
opportunity to see and try one replica Ordinary. From that bike I took
some usefull measurement and I get started. In those times these bikes
did have 50-60" front wheels but because of my size (174cm) I choose to
use "quite small" 52" wheel.

First thing I did was Rims, they are made out of normal tube which I bend round and then cut it half.
Whit hubs I started practising whit rear hub. Its only having 20 spokes.
Rim putted together.

In front wheel there is 60, 4mm spokes. After making screws on all of
them there was few hours spend. :)
Close up of front hub, here some spokes are still too long... more screw making known..
Wheels on line.
To get some scale.

For rear fork I found cool old front fork.
Steering system is totally different compare to bikes nowadays. Some American replicas use new bicycle parts here and they look... awfull.
So I planed to make everything in almost 150 years old ways.
In parts.
In parts whit frame parts.
Together.

For front fork I get A bar from Anglia front axle. From up I needed to narrow is a bit to get right look.
Here legs in original width.
Just legs. They were a bit too short so whit lathe I make there extending bars to give 10 cm more lenght.

Great work Olli! 4mm spokes, damn, that'll be a heavy bicycle! Very nice to see you made those wheels from scratch. They came out perfectly balanced from the first time? That rear wheel looks good with such few spokes.

straightness of frame I welded it together by using Tig and Mig.
After smooting parts on their right shape I sand plasted them.
Bicycle frame cant be more simple!
Under the fork. There is place for trausers protecting bar and front brake
