Hello everybody,
I saw this PU 2cv whit a 1300 GS engine at international meeting in Holland in 1987. I'd like to know more about this car, especially about the way the owner manage it for its cooling : he left all the cooling pans and added an oil coolant on the front.
I plan to do the same thing whit my GS engine, because of aesthetics and also because it makes the engine shorter. Of course, I want an engine as dependable as the original one. And at least, I'd like to go farther than the german PU : I plan to add oil coolant in the back of the engine, on each side of the gear box (under an Ami 6 bonnet), to get the engine shorter and try to leave the original oil coolant wich takes place under the manifold on the left side of the engine.
And I really don't know how to do and whit what kind of material.
So does anybody can tell us more about this german PU and my plans ?
Thanks.

I have others pics of that car but not with me now (I'm not home).
I could try to find owner of that car.
I've seen this car twice in Spa. Twice the car came on a trailer... and has been driven just for the lap of the track. _________________ www.super2cv.com |

I think I've seen this car at spa last year as well. I was also surprised that they got away with no cowling and no fan. The fact that it came on a trailer probably explains everything! I have one or two pictures as well, so when interested let me know.

So you mean this car is not dependable...
However this kind of cooling modifying is used in 2cv race car, Lomax engine, MF or BFG motorcycles. I think it's possible to do , but I don't how to be sure. That's why I'm asking you...
Are two extras oil coolant are enough ? And in witch dimensions ? Is an electric fan needed ? Will the pump oil enough strong if the oil track is longer ? Does the oil stickiness changed for more or less fluidity ?
Here are all the questions I can't answer ...
I don't want to make rod breaking my speciality !
Cheers.

if it were not for traffic jams and town driving, a car would not need a fan...
A 2cv race car is never caught in traffic jams...
a Lomax has no bonnet, so the cylinders are in full air flow when moving, and not cased in a hot engine compartment when at a standstill (like BMW motorbikes)
thats a beginning of an answer... _________________ "That bumper fits there like sunglasses on pig" O.E.

Hi this is the picture I made last year.
You can find a bigger picture here: http://www.mijnalbum.nl/GroteFoto-B4TFQ4CL.jpg
As far as the cooling concers I think that JoZeF is quite right. In addition I'd think that the rear cilinders have a much bigger chance of overheating as the front ones, no matter whether the fan and cowling are used because the rear cilinder are not in the main air flow but hidded behind the front cilinders.
Oil stickiness?? do you mean thickness or viscosity?? The viscosity of oil changes with the temperature, the higher the temperature the the easier or better a fluid, so oil, flows.
For the rest I don't know since I haven't got any experiance with GS engines and oil cooling design.

The car comes on trailer but owners drives a camper. So I dunno if they use trailer because car is not really driveable or just because they like more the camper than have a tent
Plates number of this car means, owner can just use the car to go on oldtimer meeting (cheapest german plates). _________________ www.super2cv.com |

In addition to that I'm told by a collegue in Berlin the 07 plates in Germany are for collections. One can put up to 5 cars on a collection registration and the cars doesn't have to be TUV checked, showing a few pictures of the car is adaquate for the TUV to get it on the car on the collection registration...

Hey clod, If you have worries about the oil pump not being strong enough, install an oil pressure gauge in place of your pressure sensor and you will know. Measure before you add the extra cooler and after, at the same temperature, with the same oil.
For the purpose of removing cowls from his (2CV) engine, a friend of mine added oil temperature sensors to the heads. That way you can find out if you are not burning the oil because it gets too hot. He just drilled through the valve covers and put the sensors there. A 2 way switch was used so he could check both heads on the same gauge.
Also, I have heard of several Lomaxes with the open nose bonnet that have overheated standing still in traffic because of lack of cowling and fan.
I think the only way to go is to try several options with extra coolers and measure temp and pressure. Only way to be sure... _________________ Don't ask me what I think of you 'cause I might not give the answer that you want me to.

Thanks Bart for your answer and your suggestions. Indeed, the way you describe is the best. I just wanted to have "return of experience".
cheers.

Good luck and keep us posted on what happened. I think the flat four looks fabulous without the cowling! _________________ Don't ask me what I think of you 'cause I might not give the answer that you want me to.
