Just lose the bonnet, like Jozef, and never keep the engine running when you are not driving.

Lotsa holes on bonnet and cut huge parts of inner wings off.
Are those quite new BMW boxers still air kooled?

don't know abot new boxer engines.
I wouldn't have a daily car without a fan. even motorcycles with free-flowing air cooling have problems with standing in traffic jams. so if the car is intended only for meetings and pleasure rides, than ok, but otherwise I don't think it would be practical, or durable.

I have 2 air cooled motorcycles 1 from 1973 and 1 from 1976 and traffic jam is no problem with air cooled engine, they are much more durable then water cooled engines in those kind of situations.

New BMW boxers are still air cooled.

The problem you will have with the bonnet is that the heat stays under the bonnet. Just like 2cv racers make a tunnel around the cylinder and put a small electrical fan inside.

I use to ride a lot with a friend on his Moto Guzzi 1000SP. it's a large engine and, when standing, it gets awfully hot pretty quick. and, as you said, trap all the heat under the bonnet, and you've had it...

Remember that what we feel as very hot is already 50 degrees celcius, normal engine is running at 85-90 degrees and air cooled engine can go up to 120 degrees, advantage of air-cooled engine is that it will just stop idling, then you know you have to let it cool down. With a water cooled engine most likely your gastkets will blow, leaving you with a dead engine.

Yep, you cant compare victory of german manufacturing - BMW whit
some italian motorcycle engine.. In one motorcyle rally one guy kept his
normal old BMW running next to his gottage half day.. just for fun..

ok - you convinced me - but do you think that such an engine beneath a 2cv bonnet could cope with daily traffic without forced air cooling? I am sure it could not.

somebody told me that a the clutch is not designed for that kind of engine...
the bmw engine makes other torques at other rpm's.

but felix, don't give a fuck and put a bmw-engine in :)

Without forced cooling for daily driving, I would not do it, but to make forced cooling is not that difficult and not to forget to install oil cooler will help a lot.

Just a thought Idea How about fitting an electric cooling fan from a motorcycle, (very small) just behind the grill on the 2cv bonnet. Wire it to micro switch so that when the throttle is at rest (idling in traffic)the fan comes on and keeps the air flowing through the engine compartment.
This might be enough to make the difference Question Question Question

maybe an oil-circuit thermostat-operated electric fan could do even better

Electric fans generally don't deliver enough air flow to cool an aircooled engine, although they would help a bit when standing still in a traffic jam.

Cheers, Bart

I was not thinking of cooling the engine but simply to help move the hot air through and out of the engine bay which would allow the engine to idle longer without getting too hot Neutral .
Engines look a lot better stripped of all the tinwear (in my opinion) Cool .

I think you mean this car:

It lost his Patron body a few years ago and has now a modified Burton body. Wink
