Hi everyone.
Does anyone know if the 2cv gearbox would take the power of a slightly tuned 1600cc VW beetle engine, if it is driven sensibly(almost) Wink
It will save time coverting anything else if i can use the original box mated up to the VW engine Cool .
What diff can i fit to a 2cv6 gearbox that will drop the engine revs Question
I'm thinking of a mild road cam, some head work and a side draft weber carb with an electric cooling fan Idea .
Any help guys will be much appreciated- Tony.

2cv gearbox may not take that torgue. I think your only choise is GS/GSA
or some alfasud one.

Thanks Olli. I cant get an Alfa box as they are rarer than rocking horse shit. To be honest, i think the GS/GSA might be even harder to find in the UK Sad .
Idea Does anyone make a higher ratio diff gear that i could put in the 2cv box just to bring the revs down a bit. That would do the job Cool .
Cheers- Tony

GS gearbox is easy to find in France, and you're not so far away from it!

I have a 4 speed GS gearbox in my garage. And nobody needs it!

I've seen some useless ami super chassis and complete gs mechanics in UK!!

Do you want to sell it Etienne Question Question If you think it would handle the power better, i might be interested. Cool

Hello,

2cv gear box should be able to work with twice the torke of a 2cv, during the 70's car constructors didn't had enought knowledge to dimension parts, so it is often over dimensionned.

One of my teacher, that collection 2cv show me, once we were dismanteling a gear box, that the teeth of the parts in the 2cv gearbox ware enormous face to what is done today for a such tork.

Belgium racers say that 2cv gearbox resist as well as gs gearbox.

The most vulnerable parts in a 2CV box (after taking apart quite a few) is the synchromesh rings (especially 2nd and 3rd gear) and the nut that is on the end of the transferaxle (don't know how to call it in English). This nut can come off and the axle can come through the back cover on the gearbox.

Both these problems have nothing to do with how much torque you put through it.

I say go for the 2CV. There's always the age-old "trial and error" method. If gears start to fly out, change to a GS box.

If you build it on a late 2cv box you can bugger them up all day long and theres squllions about for spares, if you use a GSA box you might still bugger it up and they arent going to be quite as easy to find at short notice like 2cv boxes are.

i have a complete ami super bit lying around, the 2cv box wont take the 1600 beetle, it just took a super charger 1015, it did
a r80 bmw is on the edge of what it can take
why not turn the the diff in the beetle box ?

Hey!

Do you want to put your engine front or back on the car?

If that is on the back, may be it is posible to use a front train at place of a rear one with specialy modified hubs in order to put disc brake on the pivot, so that you can use Cox gear box, that will resist to the torke you want to have.

Its got to go up front as it will be in a shortened chassis, van body where room inside is at a premium. Sad
The problem of fitting disks to a VW box have been explored, but it will cost so much in engineering time to fabricate the specialist parts.
As Russ says, "there are plenty of later boxes out there if i break one".
Trial and error was also mentioned and i think it might have to be along that road. So long as its road ready for the Czech world meeting 2009 and its reliable, i will be happy. Cool
