Hi guys...I'm running out of the ideas what to check on my rebuildt engine.

During the winter I had my engine out on a work bench and with a help of a mechanic friend we we rebuildt everything, pistonrings, seals, had the heads redone, valveguides new, seals, points, condenser, carb, sparkplugs....cleaned the block...everything that you should do when you rebuild the engine....exept painting it Wink

So, few weeks ago I've installed it and it run great for three days, on the morning of fourth day the engine started, runs nice and smooth on the idle, but when you rev it up it starts to run odd, you cant get the throtle over the half way, it starts to explode so to say, flame on the carb! It is not driveable, also when I pull chock it stalls!
....
Over this few weeks, I have changed
- the coil (4 used ones and one brand new), still not running like it should
- new spakplugs
- new gas pump
- checked contacts
- rechecked the wireing
....and still nothing, the car runs nice on idle but when you rev it up a bit the problem is the same

any ideas!?

sounds like a walve timing problem. the walve is still open when it ignites.

Always difficult to help from a distance but i'll give it a try.
If it's running well when idling, i don't think it's the valves.
The carb maybe overflowing as soon as the pump really starts pumping, try to stop the petrol flow by closing the fuel tube, just before you try to rev it.
Or it maybe a jet that has come lose.

in my experience it can only be something with the carb or ignition, you checked everything regarding the ignition, but that doesnt mean it is ok, I had even a brand spanking new condensator that was already broken! so that is always a possibility.

if not, it must be the carb! wrong mixture can give flames in your inlet as well! so check (take out! and clean) all the jets and clean al the little passages in the carb (compressed air) also check the main fuel filter in the carb!

good luck!

check your tappet (valve) clearances, it sounds like the inlets are tight!

+1 for a faulty condenser.
To check, run the engine with the points box cover removed and if you can see lots of sparking between the contacts, the condenser has failed.

This problem with faulty condensers is becoming more common, my solution is to mount the condenser away from the points box, usually on the front of the fan cowling, so that it can be swapped easily.

On a couple of the cars which I prepared for the trip to the World Meeting in Spain last year, I fitted a pair of condensers side by side, so that if a changeover was needed, it was quick and easy.

An alternative way of checking for a poor or intermittent spark is to use one of these small HT testers...

Noup! Crying or Very sad

Reset the valves, checked (again all the components) ...the car ran fine without the fenders on the testride, but when I have returned the fenders the car can not start?!? Fuel lines are the next on the list....I'm getting tired with this troubleshooting Sad

did you replace the ingnitionparts with new components??

maybe one of the fenders touches some electrical stuff/ or maybe the sparkplugleads are not well enough insulated and 'spark' to the fender (test in the dark, spray with water and look for spark)

maybe the bonnet hits the ignitioncoil??

first of all I would replace stuff with new parts, or even better, parts from a working car!

good luck!
