Hey,

I have been modifying my old Azu so much lately that maybe its worth of
its own topic.

I got this car from my father who bought it at 1977. After that it have
been in use in every summer. I have been in 30 different european
countries with it. In late 70's it was running with 18hp engine, then
from Xanten world meeting trip in 1983 my father bought Dyane6 engine
and gbox for it. This summer I deside to drop original 12hp in it, just for a
while. But now I got hooked for this old technic and at the moment I dont
have plan to drop 602 back on it.

This was the moment when I got tired for this "messy nice 2cv travel look"

So I made this photoshop to see what I want:

In this spring I finally closed the sided and painted wheels, not for black but dark brown, also cleaned some stickers off.

Result was already much more sober:

Cannot say that engine bay was very pretty after all these years.

So here was the start for 12hp engine. Orginal AZU blog,

Engine almost done,

Because I was in hurry to make this engine (3-4days for whole mod),
I made normal alternator on its "normal" place,

With this stock 12hp I made summer trip to Arctic sea and all over
the Finland. 3,5 weeks and 4887km!

After this trip I wasn't so tired how slow it is, but I wanted to experiment
how much speed I can get with small mods.

First thing I did was this:

New exhaust:

After this I wanted to get original lamp stand and clean everything a bit.
Original lamp stand didnt fit because there was alternator on way. So
I needed to find place to hide it. I found this idea from Lars's orange turbo 2cv.

I combined old and new propellers, to get old looks and wheel for belt,

Belt cover and new (old) propeller installed,

I didn't want to destroy white fender for this, so I find one old black fender.
Fixed rust and made nice single room for alternator,

New racing exhaust,

Tubular,

New marshall head lights,

This weekend I made some test driving with this setup.

I tried top speed in highway.

I drove 50km, take time from each 10km and here the results:

10 km 6:54 = 86,9 km/h
10 km 6:47 = 88,4 km/h
10 km 6:55 = 86,7 km/h
10 km 6:47 = 88,4 km/h
10 km 7:02 = 85,3 km/h

I'm quite satisfied with AZU aerodynamics.

Engine setup today,

New rough look with new fender and lights,

Next I want to modify heads and get better camshaft.

Camshaft I took to tuning shop at friday. While I'm wating to get
it back, I have time to spend with heads. I started this project
with old destroyed head, which I cut in pieces to see how much
I can machine those ports.

Poor head,

Exhaust port,

Intake port,

hey olli
i really like the idea of tuning this old engine! nice setup so far with the carbs and generator and so on. this takes a lot more effort than dropping in a 602!

hope you'll paint this fender white, i must say.
the car looks best in the picture's after cleaning/closed rear window/original headlight i think.

keep up the good work!

I will paint lights and fender white soon, I just wanted to keep them in
different color for a while because car have been "just white" all my life,
so now it looked a bit different for a first time Very Happy
