I need a little help to sort this out:
I need to adjust the front wheel alignment after having restored the tie rods, steering gear etc. In Haynes it is suggested to place a piece of string along the side of the wheels so that it just touches the "bumps" in the middle of the front and rear wheels respectively. Then it says a toe out of between 0-3 mm. Does that mean that the distance between the wheel and the string to the front should be 3 mm narrower than at the rear (i.e if the wheels point outwards at the front that would mean that the rim edge should be closer to the string). In Haynes it says that the distance between the string and the rear flange of the wheel should be 0-3 mm LESS than at the front of the wheel - to me that means that the wheels point INWARDS - is that correct? I'm stuck here.

marcus,
looks like another of Haynes' tiny clangers.
With the line stretched parallel to the wheels, the distance from it to the wheels should be greater at the rear than at the front to produce toe out.
Something like this...

The rope should be use just to make a first-control, nothing more actually...
First be sure your steering rack (crémaillère) is in the middle. There is a Citroën tool to lock but you can do without. Then use the rope to make your front wheels looking paralel. Then you can control the distance between the 2 front wheels, in the rear and in the front. So at that point you can adjust them to get your 3 mm difference... _________________ www.super2cv.com |

OK - so three mm more between the front inner edges of the front wheels compared to the distance between the rear inner edges of the same wheel.
Thanks! _________________ Praise the lowered! |

String! every time, why make life complicated?
set to parallel if your track rod ends are fine and toe out if there is wear in the system
i tend to check the tyres for feathering too _________________ Kissing the lash |
