I was unable to drive my car for about 5 months, as I couldn't get in and out during my last few months of pregnancy and we've only just managed to get a carseat to fit.
I used her about 2 weeks ago and got a mile and a half from my house when she suddenly lost power. If I didn't press the accelerator she would tick over ok, but if I did press it then she stalled. I ended up parking up and then walking the rest of the way to my friend's house. Once we'd had our cuppa and chat (about an hour and a half) I called the AA out. Naturally she started fine and got me home.
We took her out for another run today to check her out and she's done the same again. Mile and a half from home and she suddenly lost all power. We gave her half an hour, but now she's not starting, so we've had to abandon her. She was driving a bit unevenly and she did sound a bit lumpy.
Any suggestions would be very much appreciated, as I'd like to get out and about in her. |

Thanks,
I'll check the carburettor in the next week - the coil was brand new, so shouldn't have failed! I'll try the points after the carburettor as I don't like taking the fan off. |

Im with Josh on this one, sounds like the points have closed up which will cause this type of fault. Easy enough job to do though.

new coils can be crap to, sometimes ever worse then old ones, the quality of some is really really bad!

I'm pretty sure this coil is good, as it replaced a dodgy new one recently that completely failed on me. The garage even double checked that it was ok and lent me a spare one for a while until we were sure this one worked. |

ok if it was running fine and has been stood the first thing would be to get fresh clean petrol through it.
points wont close up standing still or the coils suddenly fail but the points may get corroded so replacement is a good bet, also if there is any oil about, and there often is under the points box, it can soak into the condenser and cause it to fail despite it being unused ( had to do this to a car that had stood in a barn all winter)
The other thing that can happen is the exhust manifold and to an extent the heads de coke themselves and the resulting crap can get stuck under the exhaust valve or when really bad stop the engine turning over.
but as it has run it should have cleared itself out _________________ Kissing the lash |

I got a parcel in the post today, with a 123 electronic ignition, a super coil, new HT leads and some spark plugs. If that lot doesn't fix it, it's probably not an electrical problem!
We started taking the points off today (fan, aarrgghh), and found the cable to the points was loose. Maybe that was the problem all along! Never mind, it gives me something to do this weekend fitting all the new toys. |

I (Dowsabella's husband) fitted the electronic ignition today, started up the car, it it fired up better than I have ever seen it. I thought I was on a roll, so fitted the new coil and spark plugs. The car turned over, but wouldn't fire. I've now gone back to the old spark plugs, coil and HT leads, but the car still won't start up.
I'm going to try jump starting it tonight, to see if it has a flat battery, although it has enough juice to turn the engine over well.
Just got to get it going again, otherwise I'm in the dog house. |

Maybe get hold of a cheap HT spark tester, then at least you'll know if the problem is related to either 'lack of sparks' or 'fuelling/lack of'?

Btw, how long since the valve clearances were checked & adjusted?
If they've been neglected and are too tight, cold starting is OK, but hot starts will be problematic, much like the doghouse...

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll send Mr D out for some petrol later on and look at getting a tester for the HT leads. I know that he said the spark was a bit weedy |

interesting that it just happens when engine gets hot.
important things which needs to be checked first:
1. - valve clearance ok? if too little, loss of power when engine gets hot!
2. - ignition timing ok?ofc with 123 it should be! and it should stay same!
3. carburetor bolts bolt down?
it also could be a fucked up fuel-pump which does not work when engine is hot. also had that.
in this case all things need to work almost perfect. you will only find out whats the problem if you make sure that everything works! _________________ in rust we trust... |

Sorry for not keeping you updated sooner. A certain small person is taking up most of my time right now.
When we turn her over to try and start her, there is no smell of petrol under the bonnet, even when the engine should've been flooded.
Hopefully in the next couple of weeks we'll get chance to try everything you've suggested that we've not yet tried, then it'll be MOT time. eeeeep. The last MOT was very expensive, and it was touch and go whether we kept her or scrapped her. |
