Help me, I have an oil leak (well, my car, anyway).

I just fitted another engine to my car. Drove it and discovered it had sprayed oil all over my left disc brake. Turned out that both oil pipes on the heads were leaking through the copper gaskets. Fixed that, they're dry as a pair of dingo's balls. But now a few drops of oil hang under the engine after one night of standing still. I cleaned everything underneath the engine. The rubbers where the pushrods go into the engine are dry. The oil pipe on the engine which feeds the heads is dry. The pipes of the cooler are dry. Oil filler tube is dry, as are breather hose, dipstick tube, camshaft gasket and crankshaft gasket.

Still drops form under the engine at the join between the block halves, standing still. The engine hasn't even been started (and it's not the drain plug, either).

HELP!

Front crank seal? A few of my cars have leaked there and it ends up dripping under the middle of the engine, although Id have expected it to only do it when it had been running....

Just a thought though!

Yep, even removed the ignition box. Even though the seal had been replaced. You never know. These things drive me up the wall, I just want to rip the thing out, remove the cooling ducts (or whatever you call it) and check everything, but there's no time.

I am reluctant to drive it. Don't want to ruin another set of brake pads because they're soaked with oil...

And you havnt got another engine to stick in it just for the time being?

All I can suggest is that if you have to drive it, take an aerosol can of brake cleaner with you and a spare set of pads.

how bad is this leak then?is it more to one side? i mean is it just one brake getting oil on?

Well, the left brake got oily when I drove it with the leaking oil feeder pipe. On the left head. Solved that, let it run with my eye on the pipe. After that I cleaned the entire engine with brake cleaner (well, what i could get at, with the engine being in the car).

It sat in the workshop while I was sanding the body and when I wanted to roll it into the paintshop, I noticed an oil stain on the floor.

After that, I cleaned it thorougly again, taking out the sand-oil mixture in the cooling ribs on the bottom of the block also, took out the ignition: everything dry. Overnight, it had a few drops hanging from the underside, as I described, and a stain the size of my hand on the floor. And it hasn't run in a week.

The drops appear in the center of the oil pan/carter on the parting line between block halves. One hangs almost at the back, and one almost at the front end.

I'm afraid your engine leaks through the two halfs of the block... Funny question probably, but is the drain plug tight and doesn't the bugger leak near the oil filiter? When not... you could try to tighten the three bolts at the bottom side of the engine. I had leaking on that edge as well the other day because the reconditioners of the engine "forgot"the liquid gasketfor about 2 inches on that bottom side, but couldn't solve it by tightening the bolts.

Good luck & regards, Bart

Hey Bart, Thanks for the advice. But the filter and drain plug are dry. As for the liquid gasket, the engine has never been taken apart that far since new.

I could try to seprate the block and put new stuff in between but I only want to do thta when I am sure there is no other problem.

When it is not pissing out and you don't have a spare engine, I'd just take it to the World meeting and cross fingers it doesn't get worse... Taking the engine apart is quite a job.

Good luck and enjoy Sweden what ever happens!, Bart
