The Stout is a good example. The 30s is the time when streamlining became the most popular. It combined well with Art Deco styling.

Most cars were just that, styling exercises, including most of the Figoni & Falaschi bodied Talbots. The Stout is a genuine attempt at beating air resistance, though. Another picture of a Stout car here:

It started much earlier though. Early example of American streamlining is a racing car built for the Indianapolis speedway: the Miller Golden Submarine:

In Europe, we had the Rumpler Tropfenwagen:

Perhaps this is the first: land speed record holder Emile JEnatzy (a belgian) in his Jamais Contente (never satisfied). An electric vehicle with an aluminium body built in 1899!! It was the first car ever to go faster than 100 km/h.

On with the show, it's time for one of the pioneers: Paul Jaray. He was an aircraft designer who styled many streamliners. He also patented a lot of aerodynamic shapes, with which a lot of prewar car designs were made.

We should be careful with the terminology we use here. Streamlined is not the same thing as aerodynamic. The E-Type Jaguar is a very streamlined car but it is far from being a very aerodynamic car. The Citroen GS is a far more aerodynamically efficient shape than the E-Type.
For some reason flat back ends work better than tails that taper off to nothing.
Also, I heard somewhere, years ago, that the 2CV is one of the most aerodynamically efficient cars around.....but only up to about 30 mph. After that it all goes wrong!

Streamlining is a word that was invented in the 30s. It was used first in design. The science of calculating flowing media such as air around objects is aerodynamics. That only seriously took off after WWII with windtunnels, computers etc.

In the early days, people were emulating the most aerodynamically efficient shape known in nature, which is the waterdroplet. You can still see that shape in the DS, in fact, round and wide at the front, tapering to a sharp point at the rear. This is the reason why the track of the front wheels is wider than the rear.

The fact that the 2cv is aerodynamically good up to 30mph is fairly meaningless, as the wind resistance force only really becomes important over 100km/h (60mph). Below that, it is much smaller than for instance rolling resistance from the wheels and resistance from friction of gearbox, engine and transmission.

Thanks for that clarification there dude. I only mentioned the 2CV because we are primarily a 2CV based forum.
As far as teardrop shapes go, can anybody find a photo of an English car of the thirties called a "Crossley Burney Streamliner"? Just another wierd shape to add to the list above!
