Hi all
Been a long time lurker on this forum , and have been very impressed with the cars and work done on here , but maybe it is time to do something about that ?
When in my twenties I owned several normal Citroen Dyanes and also mounted the body from one onto a rusted out Ami 8 creating what was called a Sidewinder in the UK , I took this to an International 2cv meet in Cheltenham [1985 ? ].
Now I am the wrong side of 50 and hanker for carbs and screwdrivers rather leaving vast wads of cash at a faceless garage just for a code to be reset.
However having looked over 2cv's I am very worried about the lack of protection from a side impact ,the B pillar is extremely thin !
Could I get some piece of mind by installing a roll cage as used in the race cars , I fancy a van would it fit ?
I would expect to lower it but nothing else unless the one I got needed a rebuild then maybe a mild channelling ?
I have b&w pictures of the Sidewinder build and a few colour pictures of the Worlds I went to if they are of interest ?
regards Paul |

Im no expert on 2cvs but have been building competition cars and hot rods for a few years now. Any form of cage is going to seriously improve your chances if mounted from the chassis. Im like you and looking for a project to get into (read another project to distract me from the other projects I have). Post some pics of the sidewinder, sounds very interesting. Matt |

If you've got a lot of money, safety devices could probably build you one to fit a van, however, one of the interesting things about a 2cv in a crash is that they just absorb the shock and almost bounce off because of the (lack of) weight.
If you're worried about crashes its probably side protection you need, so probably just chicken bars. After lots of debate with my dad and his friends who are ex racers, so they've driven cars with roll cages on the road ect, they reckoned a roll cage in say a rear impact would mean that you take the shock of the crash not the car, and that the only real benefit of a roll cage is for as it says roll overs, my friend has had his chassis reenforced, the body packed with extra tube work and box section, in the name of safety but I think all it will do is serve to slow the car down.
Worried about safety? Don't get a 2cv. |
