Dolly in Winterland three weeks ago (Gothenburg Sweden were we have had the coldest winter so far for 110 years). And a first attempt to post a picture.
Dolly is now in the warmth of the garage were channeling has commenced. More pictures about the project soon.

Very interested. I work as a Diesel calibration engeneer and do cold start as well, but at some stage you get to the limitations of the technolligy... |
There isn't any difference in summer/winter petrol, but with diesel we have several type's, summerblend what works about 0°C, some "in-between-blendings" what works -10°C to -20°C (depending of blender/seller), winterblend for -32°C and arctic blend for over -40°C...
There isn't any reason for adjust ignition timing, and if all ignition parts are good, there isn't misfiring at these temperatures what I have experienced...
My Xm diesel has "little" problems to start, when temperature drops below -20°C, if I can't use electric coolant heater. It will start, but it isn't easy, and there is so much smoke and "unburnt diesel" that it isn't nice to anyboby... I'm pretty sure there is one or two injectors started to leak slightly when they are too cold..?
When this winter is going to end, when the global warming starts to show..? _________________ Make it today, tomorrow it's probably illegal... |

| Okay, interesting that petrol engines don't have cold start probs when they are just good.
The probs describe with your XM are very commen for diesel cold start. It is hard to do any "on forum" diagnoses... but it may be your injectors are leaking. For older diesel engines (yours isn't common rail is it?) you can check 2 obvious things I can think of:
- cold advance adjustment on the injection pump.
- does pre heat / pre glowing really work (does is take a lot of current?)
But I think you would have thought of these yourself as well.
Also when the pump is older and internally pretty worn, it doesn't build up so much injection pressure, which can lead to bad starting and smoke. _________________ I like to play |

Ha! I am painfully aware of the vegetable resemblance.
When my friend restored this car I should have been more persistent in questioning his choice of color... he is actually color blind.
I have no excuse, the problem with the Lumber-jack green + Mickey-mouse white was crystal clear to me from the start.
This was back in 1977-78, I was only seven years old... but still I should have convinced him to go for an original color like Vert Embrun or Gris Typhoon instead...
