Ami Super not recharging the battery

Hi,
My Ami Super started up nicely last week after a long winter sleep, but there was no recharging of the battery. Is there an external regulator somewhere like 2cv and early GS, or is the regulator internally in the alternator? If so, is there a hot-wire of an external regulator somewhere?

The alternator seems to look newer than the car, and I would have guessed it has an internal regulator due to the look of the rear side of it. It has 4 connections and there are three wires in the car connect to it. Two is obvious but the last one can be connected to either a yellow or red wire. If I connect to yellow, there's no charging. But if I connect to red there is full charging and the amperemeter in the car is way to far up..

Hi.


Here is an alternator with an internal regulator.



If you have something like this, you might have only the "+" wire. It doesn't need the excitation or something else.

can you find a regulator anywhere there? :)
the regulator just puts some current to the generator ( as you did with the red-wire). if much current is needed, the regulator puts much current on the cable...if there is only a little needed, it only puts a little current on it.

but usually there are only 2 cables at the generator.
+ to battery
one to the regulator.

could you post a photo and the name of your generator?

Original Ami Super altenator is with external regulator like 2cv..
My AmiS is still sleeping but Pepper is on the road ( also with external regulator)

It looks a bit like this, the regulator casing is in metal. The green wire on top is a red one on mine.

Have only a picture of the front of it, so it won't tell much. The car is not at my place yet, but in a few days I should be able to have a look at it again, and at least take another picture.

Some more pics. I found the cable to regulator, which was hot-wired. It was hidden down under the battery support. And I found a couple of alternators in my parents barn loaded with more or less usable parts, one with and one without regulator. I know the one without is working Very Happy

Is it still a question what has happened here....? I think it has been going like this: This Ami has had an original Ami Super alternator with external regulator which has broke down. Now somebody has bought a Citroen GSA alternator for replacing that old one and found out that it isn´t the same alternator than before. The new one needs one + wire from the ignition lock and one wire from charging indicator light. And off course one wire goes from alternator to the battery. Someone has used a detour in that wiring and has just used the original wirings with couple modifications.. Might work but gives a headache for someone else...

An update: I replaced the alternator with another used one without regulator, and it now charges way to much even with an electronic regulator mounted. Up to 17Volts, and the needle inside stays in red area when engine rpm rise. So something is still wrong here. The battery is probably not the best, but it managed to start the car after the winter sleep recently (I wasn't able to start a modern car with it when the temperature dropped below -20 this winter..)

The electronic regulator has got D+, GND and DF connections, and I compared it with the regulator connector seen above which looks equal to a 2cvs from the 80's, and connected it like that. Can Ami Super regulators have different connections than 2cv so that I've connected D+ and DF the opposite way, and what would happen then?

Looks like I've got to drive my 2cv to the Scandinavian meeting in Åland next week even if I wanted to go with my Super..

what happes if you unplug your batterie after starting the engine?

if you unplug there is no "consumer" perhaps voltage gets lowered then.

but anyway, 17 volt is marginal.

Problem solved Very Happy I switched the D+ and DF-connections on the regulator, and now it charges perfect 14.4 Volt, and the needle inside is in perfect place Very Happy Someone must have messed up the wiring..
