As some of you may know I am building a tuned engine for this car… Visa 652cc, GS 1015 gearbox, megasquirt fuel injection, AMR-300 supercharger, modified twin spark heads and custom pistons… (Here)
Well, what started as a straight forward chassis reinforcing exercise has turned into something more… (Chassis Reinforcing here)
A Snail inspired 2cv…
Third window filled in, front indicators removed, rear vision mirrors removed (replace with old style from window mount), 50% uprated springs… Ooow and ofcourse channelled 5cm…
Pics from the last two days.
So this whole channelling thing is fun and scary... I remember Lars saying it was easy "Just weld the new floors in 5cm higher", i don't have new floors What sort of clearance issues am i going to have in the engine bay?? Handbrake lever? Bonnet latch? Steering rack?? guess i'll know soon enough!!
Rear lights, indicator and brake, i will use front indicator housings...

Cool
I think easiest is probably to replace the sills by new ones, and then have sheetmetal cut and folded with the 5cm step that you want (like I did on my AMI6) same for the rear section of the body, rather that trying to reuse the original floor metal, usually rusty and always very thin. I used 10/10 gauge steel. so no need for strengthening ridges stamped in it. But you will need to weld a small frame on the chassis to support the floors (like on 50s 2cvs)
with L shape reinforcements bracing the front and rear of the passenger compartment floors, you just put the body back on and see how high you need to make the rear boot section.
I have chassis mounted pedals, so that was very easy, but there is a good example of body mounted pedals in Acalex's topic.
have fun
Most of the time it is.

Thanx for teh support guys, makes it feel less daunting.
I went into town today and bought some material to make new sills, here is a pic of what i have acheived so far...
Thx for the tip Josef, the plan for the floors is to reuse old ones, cut out rust etc. With the new sills i have made up some 2mm L shape to weld in around the body, then i can pop rivet the floors down with some silicon, hopefully easier to remove when i replace them in another decade
Buying new floors, to expensive and takes to long... I am enjoying reusing and fabricating what i have got...
2moro i should have the new sills in, or at lest one
Luving it

Harley,
nice work on those sill sections.
Btw, don't forget that in elevation there's a slight bend needed, directly underneath the B post. That's in addition to the bend in plan view, but slitting the sill section should work, welding them back together once they're in position...
Even when we were presssing out full floors, I still used flat floors cut from zintec on 'everyday' cars.
Pic of 'bolt on' outriggers here
but with a non-galvanized chassis, they can be welded on for extra strength.

Who ever said channelling a 2cv was easy!!!!
Still having fun though lots of litol rust repairs and sheet metal work all add up!
Custom Sills
Sills fitted with rust cut out and reinforced...
I was aiming for 50mm at the rear, looks like i got 60+mm
Front box section...
here you can see the angle used to support the floors.
I am still concerned with what is going to happen in the engine bay Will i need to relocate the altinator??? I gues i will discover that when i come to it
I had some floors made up with ribbed section rolled into it, they sucked!!! looks like i am taking your advice Ken

Nice jobb, pictures and thread
About that alternator-might-be-problem... Instead of relocating it, why not make a nice looking "bulge" on the bonnet to make room 4 it?
I like it when things arent always symetrical. Like Triumph did on the fly-screen to the Speed Triple. Here's a picture of my Speed Triple(sold) with the "bulge"-solution. Would be cool on the bonnet of a 2CV.

I'm not sure you'll have any problem with 5cm channeling... Otherwise you'll have to see with Etienne. He did a system to fit everything without the doing anything on the bonnet.

Harley,
are you working double shifts on this, as it seems to be moving ahead very quickly?
Kind of you to take those upside down pictures, so that viewers in the Northern Hemisphere can see them 'right way up'.
Ken.
( OT, but this lad seems to have combined free running with cycling.
Well worth a watch in your next tea break.
