Cannot be certain, but perhaps the gudgeon pin ( at the little end of the con rod) broke allowing the con rod to flail around, smashing that hole in the crankcase and also carving a chunk out of the Visa barrel?
It looks as though the con rod is twisted, from the angle at which the little end is resting.
Game over for that engine, though... Sad

Ken.

I had a close look at it and the strangest thing of all was that the piston was completely gone...

Hi Bartje,
looking at Björn's picture, instead of Etienne's, aren't those some pieces of the piston sitting in a plate beside the engine?
As you say though, not much left...
Ken

To me that looks more like a plate with some lose engine pieces and plugs. I looked at is when Etienne made the picture. I also made a picture through the hole where you could see the heads of the valves and the piston was completely gone (can't show it now as I have no internet on my laptop). Moreover I didn't see any bit of piston near the engine or in that pitbox. Laughing Shocked Laughing

Bartje,
now that I've found my good eyeglasses, that's true.

Anyway, here's one taken of the UK equivalent, after the engine carnage at Snetterton 24 hour race back in 2004...

Not much left that's usable, apart from the n/s cylinder head and the bloomng #ent cam (which I reckon is the cause).

Actually I talked with a mechanic of the team, and he explained what happened. He said there was a "hole" in the air intake manifold. That was enough to make the engine "stopped" at full speed and blew out!
Confused

Hi Ken,

I know the club cam is an issue in the UK 2CVracing club, as I read on that forum every now and then as well. However hadn't seen this one before.... Shocked

ciao, Bart
