This is an Australian Raid 2cv built under the gum trees by Bob Dircks.
1960 AZ with 425cc engine. The first modified 2cv i have seen in Australia
Nearly everything has been modified in one way or another. Check out the alternator position and custom inlet and exhaust using stainless steel hand rails!
Cheers

Nice! Like the idea of the alternator and the headlight bracket. Sometimes it takes an "outsider" to come up with innovative ideas.
Any dyno readings regarding increase in hp/torque from that inlet/airfilter combo? _________________ Don't ask me what I think of you 'cause I might not give the answer that you want me to.

@ Bart,
dyno readings for a 425?
Maybe ratings such as 'sluglike' or 'snail speed' would be more appropriate?
@ Harley,
any ideas as to how that alternator belt could be replaced without a fair amount of spanner work...
Ken.
( Got to agree that there's lots of lateral thinking gone into this little beasty, though. ) |

I thought the same, is that alternator driven off the flywheel??? Surely you dont have to remove the engine to change the belt do you??? _________________ If it works ok, "LEAVE IT THE FUCK ALONE". |

I was just curious to see if all the modifications were worth it in gaining any extra power. I know what a standard engine delivers. Most modifications I have seen in airfilters and inlets/exhausts on 2CV engines don't actually help in gaining horsepower.
As for changing that belt, six bolts suffice to seperate engine from gearbox. I doesn't have to come out all the way. _________________ Don't ask me what I think of you 'cause I might not give the answer that you want me to.

Yes but you need to disengage the motor enough to complicate your life a lot, more in a rally car, think in wings, light bracket, engine sump and frame... |

True, but I wasn't thinking rally, I was thinking channeled 2cv like Etienne's where alternator is is the way of the bonnet. In such a car, when you do a service, you remove wings etc. anyway. Changing the belt in time (every 15.000 kms or so, should mean you will not be stranded at the side of the road. _________________ Don't ask me what I think of you 'cause I might not give the answer that you want me to.

I am not sure about exact horsepower gains but Dircks did say he noticed a bit more in top speed by a few km/h. possibly due to the slightly larger intake pipes and Mikuni carby, exhaust???
I've seen it sitting on about 85km/h with a fair payload, it has a larger fuel tank built in (60 litre?) and can hold two 20 litre jerry cans across the back + two 20 litre water containers, the front seat has been modified to accommodate a spare wheel under each side, very nice...
It was the only car on the day to make it up an outback hillclimb during Raid Australia But i think the drivers enthusiasm probably added 40% extra horsepower and grip.
I know it took a bit of machining to get the alternator belt to fit in that space, a couple of mil here a few there...
It's hard to see on the pics but the front guards have been 'concaved' so the headlights sit flush...

What i like about this car is the practicality in which it was built, without conforming to a norm or standard. For me it is a good example of form following function
Cheers

Hi folks,
Bob here....... after Harley's introduction, I thought I'd better come on in and have a chat.
The car was prepared specially for Raid Australia 2008, which finished just over a week ago.
Since leaving home (northeastern NSW) on July 31st I have done about 14,500 km. About one third was getting to the Raid start in Kalgoorlie (WA), about another third on Raid, the the remainder getting home from the finish at Kunnunurra (WA).
As Harley said the main fuel tank is 60L, it fits in the original place but extended rearwards to the step forming the jerry can "well". In that space I have 5 x 20L (plastic)cans...... on Raid I had (up to) 60L of water and (up to) 40L of extra fuel, giving a total fuel capacity of 100L. Under highway conditions (80 to 85 km/h) this gives a range of about 1600km. Under Raid conditions the little (12hp) 425 was running in 3rd gear where most 602s were just plodding in 4th, so my fuel consumption went up while most 602s went down.
The Mikuni (26mm) and larger inlet manifold might have given me a couple more hp........ maybe I get around 15.
I have just this week found a later 18hp 425 which I will prepare similarly to fit the car. I might try one Mikuni on each head.
The alternator runs very nicely with a 2 to 1 step up from crank revs.
having now done nearly 15,000 km since fitting, the belt is like new, and I expect at least 50,000 km from a belt. Modern belts really are very good.
I reckon I could change the belt as quickly as on any modern car, and probably with less tools, and less scrapes on my knuckles.
The rear hatch is made from aluminium from an ID19 roof (australian assembled ID19s had aluminium roofs !) Also the sun visor is the front part of the same roof.
The 4 wing panels are trimmed up a bit and 12mm hydraulic tube welded along the outside edge, to give rigidity as well as a tidy look.
The drop down rear tailgate forms a good seat or table for camping, and is folded (ripple form) from thin steel sheet.
The suspension, steering and drive shafts are original from the 1960 AZ, although I did re-machine the yokes for the uni-joints to take a common type, wth internal retaining clips instead of the external clips on the citroen ones.
I ran plastic tubes (3) through the chassis when I had the bottom skin off for repairs..... to run the fuel line, the rear brake line and the rear wiring through. so there are no extenal lines clipped to the chassis, and I can easily replace any of these by just pulling the old one out and sliding a new one in. I completely rewired the car with LED lighting (except for the headlights) and fitted 4 fuses and 3 relays into the system. I have 2 speed wipers, with the motor down on the firewall (not up on the dash) and I have a switch to turn the charge circuit off/on as desired, because the (35A) load of the alternator is noticeable, and when just putting around town in daytime the engine is much better with the charge off.
So far, the car has run very well, with no trouble. There are a couple of small cracks in the heatshield mounts on my homemade muffler, and on Raid I partly bent the right front suspenson arm, but managed to mostly straighten it at the raid camp that night, and it finished raid without any ill effect.
I have a few ideas for more modified 2cvs, for everyday use as well as raiding, but I'm into practical, tough and ready cars, not polished pretty things. My paint has runs in it, my stitching on the seats and roof is wiggly(I sewed them myself on my industrial machine). The panels have original dents.
I use standard ignition points and the cheapest low grade fuel I can find.
I'm not interested in high compression ratios, high octane fuel, or electronic witchcraft in ignition systems. For raiding (or everyday use) in rural Australia I need something I can diagnose with my eyes, ears and thumbs, I can fix with a pair of pliers and some fencing wire.
This is my first 2cv and until this year I have been a DS19 purist with 30 years experience in D series, with also some experience with GS (great), C35 (great), BX(Aaarrrggghhh!) Xantia (Argh!) and recently my wife has a new C4 1.6 diesel (great)

Hello Harley.
I totally agree with you about peoples enthusiasm helped Bob.
BUT...
Gert and I did the same trip, but the day before.
And we had 29 horsepowers! |
