OK guy's, as you know I'm really new to this world of 2 CV's.
Whilst I was having a look at Choco's "the Monster" thread I followed the link to his web site and the mention of 4X4 2 CV's like this one
so I am now intrigued about these 4x4's.
Can anyone explain how it all works please _________________ In-the-Shed Speed Shop. |

A 2cv 4x4 is basically simple. There are two styles.
The sahara type with two engines and gearboxes, one set to drive the front wheels and the other one to drive the rear.
The other is with one engine and a sytem to drive the rear wheel. In this case they use the original like engine and gearbox to drive the front wheels and have a have an aditional drive line to the rear, starting of the back of the gearbox, mostly with a transferbox to engage the rearwheel driveline. Than a propshaft through the car to the back. On the place where the petrol tank sits there is a differential (mostly an empty gearbox only using the differential is used for this) and from there drive shafts to the wheels.
Since words don't say so much you better have a look on the net, one of my friends builds them http://www.2cv4x4.org.uk/ and an other link I had on my computer http://guillaume.kuhnle.free.fr/choupette/index.htm

I think Sahara style twin engine is easy to build, all you need are two engines and gearboxes (which must be the same) a good chassis (preferably a box section style instead of citroen style, easier to modify/adapt) and a cunning method of making the gearchanges work from one stick/lever. thats the hardest part, genuine Saharas used a system thats not that easy to make yourself, but you could do it with some thought.
The opinions ive heard are that single engined cars are better offroad, but youre looking at serious cash (in 2cv terms) to build one. _________________

There is some photos of 4x4 2cv, also some technical info is there.
I'm making my own 4x4 project, slowly. Not the easiest way, every part has been thought several times before making...
In my project is several "home-made" parts, rear arms (and jig to make them), rear diff(made from transmission, using 3rd gear to engage rear wheel drive), main shaft to transmission (50mm longer than original), transmission rear cover (new mounting like Ami Super), adapter to mount visko-clutch (from vw synchro)... Also there is going to be GSA brakes in front and 2cv6 discbrakes in rear.
And what I need to do, is prop shaft from front to visko, rear diff mounting and fuel tank (don't know jet where I put it).
Finnish laws are quite weard, if this modification passes thru technical inspection, it's legal to put there even 1020cc engine without getting licence for that! So when this is ready, there is going to be GS engine, and of course G13..! _________________ Make it today, tomorrow it's probably illegal... |

It is probably like my friend who does Jaguars says; "it is a lot of money but not expensive ones you know what you get".

I wouldn't do that if I wear you, off road use is hard use and the gearbox appears to be the weakest link even with a standard engine gearboxes go fairly quickly. Now when you put a GS engine in it I'm afraid the gearwheels will "fligh around your ears" very quickly. Sorry. For the rest it's looking good, especially the visco clutch idea is interesting!

You're right, it isn't good idea to put any GS engine... But I think that is going to be so heavy, so it can't be "really off-road-car" anyway. Especially without hydraylic suspension, but it is another story...
In winter, with snow and ice, increased power makes more fun!

Thanks! I have spent about ten years woth this project, most of time for designing. Also it gets quite much time to find cheap enough places to make these parts... _________________ Make it today, tomorrow it's probably illegal... |

Right lads,
The boys have been out to play two weeks ago and last week. I couldn't make it sadly enough, but there is always a next time!
There is a bloody good video on this site: www.studioru.co.uk and a couple of pictures here www.deuche.be then go to offroad and sorties 2007.
Cheers, Bart |

Oh, some nine years ago was the last post to this topic...
Well, something has happened on those years, mostly on the last two...
Moved that inspection panel from tank sender to other location...
...for that. Now I can adjust the cable if necessary...
There isn't rusted floors now, just need to take new photos about...
Still plenty of work ahead, but most of the hardest is done. Some welding more for MOT, before that I need to drive with temporary plates to see how everything os working. Maybe the first test driving happens soon, try to get it road legal for next winter... _________________ Make it today, tomorrow it's probably illegal... |

Well, some kind of "ready", enough to drive...
Something missing also about interior, practically all...
Really, just put parts together to have this Dyane on our event (for older than -70 2CV:s) on last weekend. Funny to see that next to nice restored early Dyane...
Maybe it is time to make a topic about building..? _________________ Make it today, tomorrow it's probably illegal... |
