Awesome Olli!
The restored one is owned by a guy called Stuart Watkins - the pictures are from the World Meeting 2005, Kelso. The last meeting the pick up went to was Cheltenham 1985!
He was kind of bullied into getting the pick up finished just for Kelso - his wife secretly booked him in for time off at work, and John Sobey our H van registrar was instrumental in getting Stuart motivated to complete the project that had been simmering slowly for 20 years!
The other one is owned by Stuart Ulph, he's owned it since the early 90's, having found it in a barn in Lincolnshire UK, i think the running gear is almost restored, just the body to finish! _________________ www.international2cvfriends.com |

Indeed! You're not the only one with that idea Olli Thanks for posting the pictures! Last week I found the '54 Slough brochure in my room, completely forgot I had it.

Wow! I remember seeing your AZU at Kelso and reading the plaque telling people about the journey you made through the different countries to get there.... Was it something like 10,334 kms? _________________ www.international2cvfriends.com |

anyone really know Steward? it's been ages since i have seen him, we met him and a friend after he had car crash in holland, somewhere the early eighties.
My parents still have some contact, and the spoke with him at Kelso. As they understood, this is an original, special made pick-up for the britisch army.
Here is a picture taken by a friend of mine, at a military meeting in Britain half a year ago.
I have some more pix from this car.

Hey, the green one is a replica built from an 80's 2cv.
In october I met some "2cv english guy" as John Sorbey and we talked about these pick up.
The one you show, Olli, is terrific. I love the inside : simplicity, good colors... I really wish to see custom 2cv in this way in the future... _________________ www.super2cv.com |

Yeah, the milatary one is a replica, it has an modern dash inside.
My friend was told that cars like this, were originally used to distribute soup and so among the troops on practice in Britain. They were never used in "war" or overseas.
Those are not "facts" but that was told to him on that meeting.

The original 2cv pickup military version was adopted by the royal marines because it was the only vehicle, at that time that was light enough to be air lifted by the wessex helicopter.
They were stripped out and often had the window glass removed to reduce their weight further and allow the fitting of extra radio equipment in the rear.
These pickups were used by British Army Forces during the Falklands war against Argentina.(there are some photos of them being air lifted on the web but i cant find them at the moment). _________________ If it works ok, "LEAVE IT THE FUCK ALONE". |

Tony's correct in saying that they were slung beneath Helicopters, but i understood that only saw active service during the 50's/early 60's?
The Slough factory only built them during this time & to still have in service at the time of the Falklands war in the early 80's seems wrong. As far as i know they were based on the ship HMS Bulwark, there are photo's around of them lined up on the deck... Some naval personnel that served on the ship at that time have reported that they were pushed over board at the end of their active service - the pick up's, not the personnel!
Although some are believed to have been brought back to the UK & sold through the service vehicle release centres/auctions... _________________ www.international2cvfriends.com |

2CV english specialists told me that was a legend. The army pick-up 2CV have been destroyed in a regular way and they aren't throw in the sea...

^^Yep, different people, different stories. The one where the pick ups were pushed over the sides was doing the rounds probably 15-20 years ago. The lastest opinion is that they would have been brought back & sold on through dealers in ex service vehicles.
I seem to remember reading in the 2CVGB magazine that at least one guy saw an ex army pick up being used by civilians back in the 70's.... _________________ www.international2cvfriends.com |
