Just had my car MOT'd and it failed on excessive play in one of the kingpins, even though I only had them replaced 12 months ago and I've only done about 2000 miles (in the dry) since then. The pins were greased this morning before the test.

I've got the car lowered as far as it'll go just by unscrewing the tie rods. I haven't cut and welded the arms yet so I know the caster is well out, but would this cause excessive wear on the kingpin? I'm guessing it might as the pin will be at a more extreme angle to the road.

Anyone else had similar problems after lowering?

PS - getting the arms cut and welded this week anyway!

Andy ive had my lowered in that way for three years and no probs mate.
Have heard stories of sub standard king pin kits which wear out in no time at all, perhaps you've had one of these kits fitted? Sad

same here.

Only fit original quality and there shouldn't be many more problems

Thanks guys - I've just had a chat with Richard Dalton (UK specialist local to me) and he reckons it's possible that the arm could be worn, which I was concerned about when I had the pins replaced but the garage didn't mention it.

Dropping it off with him tomorrow for investigation and to have the arms cut and welded.

He did mention that lowering puts more stress on the track rod ends due to the heavier steering and that it might cause premature wear of the kingpins. I'll have a proper chat with him when he's done the job and see what he finds. I doubt it is that though as I can only have done 300 miles with the car lowered. (And almost exactly 1700 since having the pins done).
