Hey all!

I'm a 27-year-old Finn who really got into 2CV's in 2001 when I got my ´77 2CV6. I've grown up in a Citroën family and my dad's first car was also a 2CV, a 2CV4 to be exact. It was very badly rusted and went to the crusher in the mid-80's. I've always been into old cars. I started getting into older American iron when I was about 10 years old and was about to but a '63 Nova 4-door when I decided to look into the 2CV scene as well. I thought that getting a 2CV would be easier on my student's wallet and also, of course, there was the heritage of Citroëns in the family that had to be considered. :) After I got my 2CV I was instantly hooked. I love the simplicity, the body lines, the idea of the car and the spirit of (most) of the people that like working with these means of transportation.

My '77 was an original bright green, but after I bought it I decided to refurbish it a little and took the body off of the frame in the winter '01/'02. I got the bodywork done and took it to the paint shop in the spring and had it buttoned up in the summer of '02. During the next winter I built a pretty serious audio system in it, tore out the old seat covers, had new ones sewn out of black fabric and off-white artificial leather and competed in the Sound Quality circuit in Finland over the summer of '03. I tore out the stereo the next summer and sold it off as I had to fund my 10-month stay in Mexico, where I was in student exchange. I also dropped in a 652 Visa engine in the meanwhile. After that I've just basically driven it and done whatever's necessary to keep it on the road.

I'm still looking to replace the original gearbox with a disc brake version and one with longer gears. I have a slightly broken Acadiane gearbox lined up, which I might be able to buy.

Well, anyway, here's the car:

On show at American Car Show Helsinki '03 (right across from Parotech's 206CC that was the big thing in the plastic custom euro scene that year :) )

Trunk install at the same show. That's not the actual number plate btw.

Some of the interior. I also had midbass speakers in boxes mounted under the seats.

I personally love the fact that Olli, Etienne and you all have founded this forum. If I don't make it to the World Meeting I definitely want one of those stickers! Very Happy It's great to know that there are also others besides Me and Olli who are interested in modifying 2CVs. Let's keep the ball rolling!

Cool Erkka, I see that you are not so low budget in your approach.
With that sound system everything was shaking with the bass, I suppose?

Any plans to radicalize your car?

Actually I built the car with quite a low budget during my studies buying stuff bit by bit. :) The most expensive single part was the paint job at 850 € (I got it done at an adult vocational school), then the Visa engine at 500 € and then the sewing and cloth for the upholstery at 350 €. The stereo I got through a sponsorship deal and basically got all the money that I put in it back when I sold it off...so I wouldn't say that I'm super low budget but not super high either. :)

Yeah, if you really cranked it up it did. :) But I rarely did that, as the system was built for sound quality...I just like to listen to music when I'm driving and with the top down it takes a bit more power. :)

I- have lots of pretty radical ideas but I'll probably realize them on another 2CV...I'll keep this one as a driver and probably just lower it a bit more. I'd like to build a channeled ride street rod/kustom style...But we'll see. :)

Yeah, I hear everyone talking about channeling. I think this will be for my next project as well. A friend of mine has a rusty '59 AU body lying around. (I am SO jealous) He plans to put it on a 2cv6 chassis/engine. The floor is completely rotten so he wants to channel it. When he does, I'll be there with my camera to watch and learn...

He has already chopped an Ami8 and knows a thing or two about metalwork.

As for high budget/low budget: my first paintjobs were all rolled with house paint....

Upholstery was just the seats that I found lying around.

Sound system was Supertech cassete player with 20 Euro speakers...

So yeah, for your first car, you are HIGH budget in my book.

Yep, I think the 2CV and its derivatives are the perfect candidate for channeling. You basically HAVE to do it if you want to ride really low (like most of us seem to. Shocked ) and the structure of the car lends itself to channeling pretty well. I think the only bigger issue with channeling comes in the front, with steering linkage and pedal placement etc...but those are small problems to be solved. Following the project with your camera could be a great idea, even better if it could be posted up here! It'd be cool to collect all sorts of tech tips and tricks for 2CV customising over on these pages..

I love doing metalwork even though I'm not so good at it...I practiced on this 2CV basically, and I still need a LOT of practice..Well, at least the guys at the painting school had fun doing the prep for the paint!

Well, putting it that way yeah I guess you could call it a high budget 2CV...but I built it over 2 years from a very low total montly budget (around 600-700 € per month max total income during that time) so that's why I call it low budget. Very Happy

Well, to be said about low budget: it makes you inventive about certain things. When you cannot afford something, you make it yourself and learn more than just buying things.

'59? Must be an AZU. Anyhow, it's nicer to customize a fifties car with periodly correct parts. An eighties engine from a 2cv6 or Visa is a big no no. Must be great to fit a 425cc in it, upgraded with an old 500cc kit and dual carbs for example.

Edit, welcome on the forum Erkka Wink

Yep, exactly. :) The only things that I had made by someone else were the paint and the sewing in the upholstery. Oh, and the round aluminum trim rings I had a friend cut on a lathe because I tried to make them using a saw but couldn't get them round enough. Everything else I did myself and with my dad. I hope to be able to do paint and upholstery myself in the future.

Doing it yourself is what it's all about for me...it's at least 50% of the enjoyment of having a 2CV. :)

@ Erkka: that's how I got into the special paint. Trying it on an old car, getting better, practising and now doing it for others as well.

@Sam: Well, you are right but when I have to chose between period perfect and more power, I go for more power. Also, right now it is just a body, no chassis or engine or anything. To complete the whole car with 59 parts will be too much trouble. It's not like we're going to paint it metallic or put 18 inch alloy wheels and carbon look mirrors on it....
