I was wondering if there could be a handy overview of all that is known about tune-ups and adjustments to the standard 602 engine. I want to be well oriented before i make a decision about how to beef up my engine and give my deuche a little more edge.

What i know:

Lightened flywheel:
+ Improves pick up acceleration
+ fairly cheap (around 75 euro)
- less stable in low RPM
- no increase in BHP

Cylinders and pistons with higher compression rate
+ increase BHP

Anyone have more ways to modify the engine? In the end i would like to make a decision how to positively improve my engine. I do not want to keep repeating that of course this choice is a personal matter and i think everyone should do what he likes best.

classical tuning stuff:

- polish your intake manifold
- use bigger carburator "injectors"

- be shure that your engine gets fresh cool air ( perhaps use a "dust- sucker" )

- set up everything perfect. ( frehs oil, valves, ignition and so on )

- be shure that your oil-filller is ok ( if not a few hp will be lost...)

- be shure that your baal bearings are ok.

- lighten your car, put everything out you don't need. (power to weight ratio )

- more pressure in your tires

If everything is ok the 602 engine isn't as poor as everyone says !

One thing is really important:

don't use delta-mics ! :)

Yeah, Deltas are not "aero", whit wide tyres you destroy aerodynamics even more and get also more rolling resistance.

One of the most imporant thing to get right is a good spark.

The 123 ignition is a good idea which is ment to be 'fit and forget'

6 mounths ago I bought a stock 2cv with 18,000 miles from new, never been over 60 mph, more services than I could have thought posible, one every year with MOT, '1,000 miles a year' and a 123 ignition.

In every respect the car is like new BUT it drives like a pig on wheels!

I tried,

Carb clean and setup, no better

New oil/filter, no better

New plugs/leads, no better

New coil, slightly better, top speed up 5mph @ 64-66mph

So off with the grill and took a look at the 123, what a mess! The monkey who instaled it must have used a hamer, oil was every were and was out of alignment by a mile.

I have put a new 123 in, the old one looks to be in need of a sripdown as oil is stiil coming out of the pcb at the back.

Things were looking up, 70mph , but still did not feel like it should, all my other cars have much more go, this engin feels layzy.

Last resort, a new coil, the yellow one from ECAS, a lot of money, but what a difference!

Starts first time, 70+ mph and drives like a happy motor.

So we can do a lot of tuning to our 602's but it needs to have a good spark!!

I'll second that. The yellow coil made a big difference to the starting and running of my 2CV...
