Hi folks,

I'm Claude, from south west of France, Egletons, Corrèze county, the place where was the last national french meeting of 2cv friends.

Before talking about "soudainement", I introduce my past rides... (well only the modified ones).

The first special 2cv I made was a petrel blue 2cv4 in 1992. Unfortunately, I don't find pictures of it. I painted the wheels as Bartje made on its blue ride(white ring and blue). I had AZAM bumpers with the black plastic snap ring painted in white, a 1961 aluminium grill, AZAM's Marschall Equilux Headlights (the one with the large chrome ring) and a white canvas top. I dropped it a little bit, and it had a good rake. At least, this car had a 602 in place of the 435. It was a really beautifull ride, in the Californian look spirit. I should have replace the front wings by old ones, without the indicators and transforme the rear panel to make it older, but I sold the car (after I replace it in an total original configuration, with the 435 and the rectangular headlights !). It might be one of the best realised car I made...

Then it was time of my "magic cauldron" a 1969 Estate Ami 6. Originaly blue, I painted it in grey and pink, dropped it, and put GS hubcaps and Ami 6 Club headlights ... It was a funny car, not to look at too close (painted with brushes, very rusty ... ). Here are pictures :

Here it is without the GS hubcaps. I find it better like this now...

And here it is the day before it was cut up ...

After that, I made an other ami 6 estate club in a Cal'look spirit : the body shell was white and wings, doors, front panel and bonnet were "antilop beige". With a roof carry-luggage and a "GH" accessory windscreen cap, well dropped again, it was quite cool... But, again, I don't have any picture of it Embarassed The car have been destroyed.

I drove an AX several months while I was rebuilding a crashed 1987 2cv6 I bought. I wanted to make a clean Daily Driver with. I changed the chassis, brand naw 602 engine, Ami 8 gearbox, dropped it and painted it in its original "cormoran grey" with "palmeraie green" scallops. And, top of the top, the Deltaline wheels :

Today, I still have the 1987 2cv

but without the deltaline wheels, replaced by ami super wheels,

a "bitza" (an ami super with a 1300 engine and 5 speed gearbox and 2cv bodyshell I bought in 1997)

and "Soudainement", an 1966 saloon Ami 6 I painted in 3 days (a bet with a friend) in tribute of the famous Plymouth Belvedere "Suddenly". This Ami 6 will be completely rebuilt, in the same spirit, but doing it in a better way. I have a dream for this car : run with it at Bonneville to beat the llandspeed record of J/PRO category, today owned by an Honda N600 with about 75mph ...

Many of you know this car : pictures of it has allready been posted on this forum :

An Etienne pict

And if you want to know what I look like like, Etienne took this picture :

Be seing you.

Claude

Hey Clod!

Welcome to forum!

Thanks for this story, it was interesting.
Is that speed record still true!? I think tuned 602 can run whit aerodynamic
Ami body quite easily +100mph (+160km/h). Americans maybe dont have
intrest to drive whit these small engines like 600cc they rather use 600cid. Laughing

With a 652 it's easy.

Regulations for salt lake racing in that category imply that you use original Engine and original capacity

Hi Clôd,

Welcome on the forum. After many years of seeing the Ami on the internet I finally saw your car in real life during the Nationals in Egletons, looks great! I stopped you on the runway to take a picture of it. Too bad the picture sucks but I guess Olli can shop a little to get it on the salt lake Wink

Salut,

Sam

Well guys, let's see what could we do. Many of you seems to be enthusiast for this idea : beat a land speed record on one of the famous spot, Bonneville, El mirage or Muroc...
I made a folder in 2003 with many datas from the South California Timing Association, and particulary the current records and the general rules. At this time, I noticed that the records in J/PRO could be reach by a 2cv or derivated well made : 92.337 mph (148.6 km/h) at Bonneville by Gerald Davenport on "Dynamic simplicity" in 2001 and 72.838 mph (117.22 km/h) at El Mirage Dry Lake by Bob Jucewic on a car prepared by him and Bob Duncan in may 1993.

I didn't update since april 2003, and those records have been beated : today, Bonneville salt lake and El Mirage dry lake land speed records for J/PRO are owned by Eric Burns, on "Evil Tweety" with 99.299 mph (159.81 km/h) since october 2004 at Bonneville and 85.441 mph (137.5 km/h) since november 2006 at El Mirage. There is no land speed record at Muroc dry lake for J/PRO, and the East Coast Timing Association has record a record in 2006 for J/PRO with the Fleming Flyer driven by Gerald Davenport at 95.238 mph (153.27 km/h) on the concrete of the World War II air base located in Maxton , North Carolina (they don't have dry lakes or salt lakes in this part of U.S !).

Here is Evil tweety, a banal Honda N600 ! :

Have you seen de DS in background ?

And here is Gerald Davenport's Crosley "Fleming Flyer" :

So, now, what about the rules ?

A vehicle engaged in a land speed record correspond to a class and an engine class.
The car classes are divided in four general categories: Special construction, Vintage, Modified and Production.
The engines of 2cv and derivates (375 cm3 -22.88 ci-, 425 cm3 -25.94 ci-, 435 cm3 -26.55 ci- 602 cm3 -36.74 ci- 652cm3 -39.79 ci- and 1015 cm3 -61.94 ci- for an Ami Super) correspond to three engine classes :
H : 62ci thru 92 ci or I : 46ci thru 61ci (for the Ami super)
J : 31ci thru 45 ci (602cm3 and 652cm3)
K : 30 ci and under (375 cm3, 425 and 435 cm3)

In each car class, you have several groups. But in each categories, you can't have each class of engine.
Are existing for J and K engine classes (H and I are existing for all car classes except Vintage -only automobiles bodies produced by an american manufacturer prior to 1948, at a rate of 500 or more yearly, or exact replicas of such bodies-, Classic -American coupes and sedans between 1928 and 1981-, Pickup and Truck).

Special Construction category.
The pinacle of the straightaway racer's art. It contains two groups, the unlimited Streamliners and open wheeled Lakesters, running both blown and unblown, gas or fuel engines. These are all-out straightaway vehicles with non-stock engine allowed. Innovation is unlimited. Modified production bodies are forbidden.
Streamliner class is for the all-out land speed record car. Cars in this class must have at least four wheels, but they need to be arranged in a rectangular configuration. The design of the body is restricted only to the extent that at keast two wheels must be covered.
Lakester are special cars constructed in such a way that there is no streamlining, fairing or covering of the wheels and tires.
Examples :

Hardman's 2003 streamliner.

Hardman's 2002 lakester.
They generaly use motorbikes engines.

Modified category.
It encompasses American and foreign coupes, sedan an pickups (with full stock beds), unaltered in height, width or contour, and with stock panels mounted in original relationship to each other, which have been modified to such an extent as to no longer fit into the production category. Cars generaly accepted are sports or Gran Turismo coupes are specifically forbidden. A generic requierement for this category is taht the car must have been originaly produced with suitable seating for four average adult persons.
Within the Modified category, the amount of modification determines the class. For example, a Gas Coupe is basically a Production car with an engine swap, an Altered is a Gas Coupe with headlights and grille covered and the engine set back, a competition coupe is an Altered with the nose lengthened and streamlined.

Are allowed for J engine classes (not K):
Gas Coupe and Sedan (/BGC, /GC). this class encompasses coupes, sedans and convertibles which must have engine swap, quickchange rear end, or a non-stock supercharger, any one of which makes the car ineligible for competition in Production class. Gas coupe class includes Camaros, Barracudas, 1958 or later T-Birds, Mustangs, compacts or other cars of this type. 500 must have been produced yearly.

I'm not sure it could be possible to engaged a 2cv or an Ami in modified.
I don't understand all the rules, especially the quickchange rear end...

Production category.
This category is intented to represent typical transportation vehicles which may be purchased from ANY automobile dealer.
Allowed for J class engine (not K).

Production coupe and sedan (/PRO -gas only-) class for American and foreign coupes, sedans, unaltered in height, width or contour, with all stock panals mounted in original relationship each to other. this category does not include cars properly classified as Sports or GT, such as foreign cars without rear seats suitable for continued adult occupancy. It does includes Camaros, Barracudas, 1958 or later T-Birds, Mustangs, compacts or other American cars of this type.
This is THE category for our cars !

Production supercharged ( /PS -gas only-)
Intented for American and foreign coupes, sedans and pickups (with full stock beds) that meet requirement of the Production Coupe and Sedan Class that are equipped with factory supercharger systems. The vehicle must be as originally equipped and configured.

Gran touring Sport ( /BGT, /GT -gas only-)
series production sports cars and coupes, as well as limited production cars by a recognized automobile manufacturer, which are primarily intented for comfortable high speed touring.
Rules for this class will be strictly enforced to ensure that cars entered here in are typical of street machines which may be purchased from an automobile dealer... May be a Bijou or an UMAP ? No 'cause no "K" engine class !

That's all I know about the rules !
I don't really understand all. for example, I don't understand the difference between blown, unblown and supercharged or the difference between gas and fuel...
I found all of this on, the SCTA website. Now, I just have to rebuilt entirely "Soudainement" and find sponsors and money to engaged it at bonneville and El Mirage ! It will be really funny ! I'm sure we could reach the actuals records in J/PRO
Twisted Evil

I realise that I said doesn't give many information about the rules. what is allowed ion engine, gearbox, suspensions, brakes, ...
It is possible to get the complete rules book on the SCTA website, but you have to resgister at the SCTA (about 90$ I think) and then pay more to get the rules book... Confused
But in it, you may have all the rules in detail ! Twisted Evil
