It's often a slow process... I'm sure there are some guys around you with whom you can "learn".

by the way "Balkan Custom" sounds like a mean machine.... Twisted Evil

I am planning on taking it slow - I am a big fan of rust, but the body of my 2cv is in too good shape to be "destroyed" by rust.... And my chassiss is too destroyed by rust so first I need to change it... The idea was to make something low, matt black or greyish (like that woody dyane) whith decent pinstriping and frenchet taillights for starters. But for now - new chassiss and maybe lowering it a bit... Ofcourse - roof rack is a must!

I look at it this way - balkans are interesting place to be born in, somewhat brutal, and I would like to incorporate some of that brutality in my car in future.

I think this is a bit OT, but...

Balkan, your first post must be the best post ever on this forum. You truly seem to understand what it's all about, congratulations for that! It's unique to see someone like you who respects the spirit of this forum and you don't want to show your car because it doesn't fit here (yet).

Welcome!

@Balkancustom: You are right, there are many ways to modify your car, or even, not modify but just drive and have fun. All are OK but they don't have a place on this forum. Keep thinking of your custom-ideas, one day it will be time to make them real. Maybe not on this car, maybe the next, or the one after that. Besides, I think most people here don't have a garage or tools. Just the will to make their car the way they like it!

@Punky: I don't really see the difference between US and Beetle customs. Most Beetle customs are from the US, or inspired by US beetle customs after all.

"Custom" originated in the 30s, when companies like Westergard (US) modified cars to the taste of their CUSTOMers. That's where the word comes from. A customer would buy a car, see aspects he didn't like and have them changed. It was very much about individuality, no two cars were the same.

In today's car modifying, people tend to look at a certain style (like hoodride) and try to copy that. They buy the style correct wheels, fit a style correct light on the bumper and put style correct roofrack on. That's not individuality and not the "custom" spirit as it originated. Instead of thinking about their OWN car and what they like and don't like about it, they try to make it look like someone else's.

For my car, I liked the shape of the nose. I tried to accentuate that by removing bumper and blinkers. I didn't like the look of the "box" on the back of my Acadiane so I cut it off. I like the look of stationwagons and woodies so I built it like that, in a way that fits the Acadiane shape. I like flames and gold sparkly paint so I paint it like that. Notice, no K&N filter, no deltamic wheels, no chrome shiny bits, no spoiler kits, nothing out of a catalogue, only handmade stuff.

There will be no other car like this because there is nobody with the same taste (I hope). I say OWNSKOOL instead of Old skool.

Few quote's:
BalkanCustom wrote:
Few guys have made this forum and are trying to create a new scene in 2cv world - thumbs up guys! They have a vision, and, from all I can see, are working hard to make it work - it is not an easy job, I should think!

In my eyes a few guys started this forum/custum 2cv scene because there wasn't really one.. And those guys are trying (in my eyes) to create the custom scene as they want it to be. What I mean is, if they don't like the car, the car is bad, not a custom and not "Snail"
In that case I think you need to screen the new people, to check if they fit in with their ideas.

This is just as how I see it, no offence at all to anyone on this forum or who started this board. I love reading this forum.. I don't post a lot, but looking to all the projects, thats what I do most on this forum.

JoZef wrote:
This isn't excluding people, it's excluding shit cars. the owners of said shit cars, are very welcome to start a new project, and actually DO something interesting/well thought.

But the shit-car belongs still to the owner... If his car isn't welcome here, the owner feels also not welcome on this forum.

See for example the next topic:
http://snail.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=340
This guy doens't feel welcome (see page 2) here becouse his car isn't that what "members" want to see.. I might not belong on this forum either, I love the way his car looks...

And who's the judge if my car is good looking or not... That's still mee I think.. If people don't like it, let them look the other way please...

From the read before post-topic:
Etienne wrote:
I don't mean Deltamic wheels are totally prohibited here. Just don't use them on your car just because you didn't find anything else.

It's a bit of a contradiction... It's better to not roll on DeltaMics, but if you looked for anything else and didn't found any, it's o.k.

@Kustombart:

I have allmost the same.. My car misses the nice paint job and flamethrowe exhaust... I miss the big head Mr. Green

Greetz,
Tom

I was in doubt about posting all this, but I wan't to express my opinion freely, without offending someone...

Seems to me majority of the cars in cool beetles topic is, well, plain lowered cars with a cool paintjob, rusty or faded or whatever. And beetle scene is often referred to in these pages as something to learn from.

It would be great to see more 'real' 2cv customs here, prime examples of beautiful workmanship and matchless style. But if the point of making this forum was creating 2cv custom scene, I find it inappropriate to be so exclusive. Because: if I make my AK400 almost standard, but with a matt paint, a roofrack, a little lowered, some details of my own, then, maybe, through learning from other guys on this forum, receiving constructive criticism when I post pictures etc, well, maybe I will have the necessary stimulation and courage to cut up my dyane as my next project and make something really customized.
Being so exclusive would seem appropriate in a custom scene as developed as beetle scene is. But I think you can't educate people if you allow showing only cars from those who already know things, who have the skills, developed sense of aesthetichs, etc. In my opinion, that's not stimulating for people to start thinking differently. Of course there is a lot of crap now, for fuck's sake, but how on the earth do you think something will change, if not by gradual learning? I think the way it was until now – just expressing argumented opinion when someone posts something – is much better on the long run, than putting a ban on cars which are not up to some criteria which is impossible to set anyway.

I'm with you Tom. Who should decide whether a car is shit or good?
I thought this Forum was for people who are interested in Modified 2CV's. I didn't realise that there was a hidden agender, whereby all Snail cars had to look the same.
Didn't Hitler have hidden agenders and try to make the world into a blonde haired, white only race.
I am not saying that ANYONE on this Forum is like Hitler or has his ideals, but surely any ideas about modifying 2cv's is better than none at all.
If we want the 2cv scene to take off (which i do), as it has with the VW scene, then we need to learn to accept other peoples ideas and realise that although they might not be to your particular taste, 'IT IS THEIRS' and should be encouraged.
Only by generating more modified 2cv's will the scene get off the ground and grow.
Sorry to go on but thats my view (for what its worth) and i dont like it when the same old comments are used to bully people into changing their ideas into somone elses.
I've said it before--- "Its YOUR car, YOU build it how YOU want it".

When you screen the present members, I think there are around 5 members left who fit this profile. Wink

Hoodride is a car with a shit paintjob, an extra light on the bumper and a roofrack, nothing custom in that.

so, does this car fit in with the ideals of the board?

To my taste, it is not a custom. Whether it fits here is for Snail moderators to figure out.

Etienne's first car may not be an out and out custom but it did inspire him to build his channeled Dyane. So Sivipas has a good point. Accepting lesser cars may lead to great new creations by the owner.

@tony england: hey, didn't Hitler also invent highways? I'm not saying he's a great guy but he wasn't all bad. Wink

yes you are growing Bjorn!

Personally I think that snail forum is not for the 2cv builders that restore theire 2cv to original, for the rest, any small modification should be open for input here. Maybe for some people a small modification is done in 1 hour and not considerd customizing, but for the beginner it could have taken hime 1 week and he feels it as customizing. If the starters want to have a growing scene, it's those people that could become big changers.

I must admitt that the input from Olli is an inspiration, but I change it to my preferred view.

And guys, please can we stay focused on the core, keep posting those great customs, just for inspiration and support.

As Tom I spend more time om 2cv.nl, because it's more my cup of tea, but I like to see new progress from Stefan and Ettiene.

Yep, you are right BUT its not for all kind a modified 2cv's. If you would
kindly read this message you would get small idea what kind a style its about.

As I launched this forum I made it cos there is not so much 2cv custom
culture going on so local 2cv forums are not enough to talk about
2cv customizing. (at in least finnish 2cv forum you get comments
like "why to modify, why it cannot be original")

I'm not fan of tuning cars or tuning 2cv's so I didnt wanna make
"modified 2cv forum" which would have all styles on it. This forum is
greated to make 2cv custom scene better, thats why "2cv style modified"
are not included, I'm speaking here about modified 2cv's which are taking
their ideologia from 2cv world (example hippy paint + eyebrowns on head
lamps). Snail spirit is mixing 2cv whit ideas from american hotrods/customs
(Classical ones), VW scene, old (50's) 2cv customs. If 2cv Tuning people
or 80's style customizers wanna show their greations they can make their
own forum.

So if some one does not like negative comment its better not show
anything puplic. If take example: some one comes on our forum and
makes topic of his 2cv what is clear Tuning. it does not fit on
our forum
and we need to erase it or explane to starter of topic
what is wrong now. We have to draw line somewhere, and where that line
is drawn is job of 3 moderators who started this forum.

About word custom, it means that something is modified out of original.
So all kind a even small modifications is CUSTOMIZING. even tuning is
customizing. So what Bart is saying about custom is just his own vision.
Hoodride and Restos etc. are customs - Mild Customs. and they DO FIT in
this forum. Your car does not need to be cutted on small pieces to be in
Snail standard.

Shocked

Nope, this is so wrong thinking. Thats why we have so much shitty 2cv
customs out there cos people think that anything is better than original.
Original is MUCH better than to something really shit!

And whit your Hitler visions you can stay home. When we made this
forum we wanted to have it in Classical customizing styles! If that is
hard to understand, I can't help. This place is not concentration camp,
if you wanna show cars what does not fit here you can go some
other 2cv forum to show them.
