NOTE: I split this topic from VW customs topic

This one was in our biggest custom car show - FHRA American car show
Helsinki this weekend. Its just great (maybe exept flames). Hope to see
something built in this guality in 2CV scene soon!



Btw, how many show guality 2cv customs there is? Not speaking about style
now but here is some I remember: Red some sort of PickUp whit Flames,
Yellow 4door woody, Woody's wine red woody, Petres Jaune Azu (and
maybe paethon) and some tuning 2cv's. Some else? Not so much anyway
Confused Even in Finland there is at least one VW in every custom car show.
No one wants to use money in our scene?

Its not that Ollie. I can only speak for myself (but i'm sure i'm not the only one) that IF i had the money to produce a top show vehicle as the VW you have just posted, then i would love to create a real show stopper, perhaps a G VAN built to a very high spec.
The problem is that as you get older and things like children, houses and mortgages come along and not forgetting taxes which allow the scrounging scum that live in our country to do nothing all day and go out a steal from us while we are at work.
I will continue to build cars and vehicles that i am happy with and which i enjoy driving and getting a great deal of fun out of, even if it means that i have to build it on a tight budget.
I WOULD RATHER CREATE SOMETHING, THAN NOTHING AT ALL.

I agree whit you Tony, BUT I bet beetle owners has kids, houses, boats,
stereos, grill equipments aswell.. If you wanna make real show 2cv and
you can made almost everything by your self you can do it whit around
7 000-15 000 euros.

First of all you got have the money before you can actually spend it (sorry,.. wise guy Wink ). Once you have money it is also a matter of priorities, like Tony says.

However you are sort of right, there aren't many cool 2cv's around, although you shouldn't under estimate it, not looking at style there, are quite some custom 2cv's around, but I think you do not always tend to see them, cause generally spoken 2cv peopel are probably not "show" people. Moreover there are quite some people who do technical modifications who don't really show them, partly because they just don't care to show.

At the end of the day, I think it is also a matter of mentality, 2cv scene is much more about common things around the car (meetings, having fun, BBQ etc.) than about the car itself and show that... as where beetle and american car scene is probably also about common things around the car but also very much about the car itself, causing much more interresting cars.

On real show 2cv's you are absolutely right, there aren't many... although to be farely honest I don't miss them cause I'd like the style you show in the picture... The woodys and such are nice, but something really pimp with too shine paint and chrome, I'don't like at all. Anyhow nice topic for discussion though.

I think there are several reasons for the hot VW tuning scene as opposed to the non-existent 2CV tuning (showcars or whatever you call them) scene.

It has a lot to do with the place the original cars were sold. Beetles and Buses were exported in significant quantities to the US and after a few years, especially in California, they were picked up by the hep cats who thought they were cool. Any and all cars in america are customized at some point and the Veedub was no exception.

Many custom equipment shops over there were quick to produce kustom parts and accesories for VWs while to this day almost no kustom parts exist for 2CV. We all know the limited choice of wheels or engine mods. For VWs, there is a vast number of parts like that, available by mailorder.

In europe, the countries that spend most money modifying cars are probably Germany and Great Britain. People there like to spend money on their cars, and the beetle and bus have been sold there for a long time and were way more popular than french cars, including 2CV.

Also, I think generally a different crowd is attracted to vw than citroen. I hate to say it but the VW crowd is more hip. Citroen people are crazy and fun (some pipe smoking and dull as well) but just not as fashionable (and wanting to show off their cars to others).

I think for a customizing scene to develop, it is a question of:

1. Enough cheaply available cars
2. Enough custom parts and accesories
3. Drivers wanting to have the latest hot parts on their cars
4. People wanting to show their modified cars at shows
5. People seeing modified cars at shows to use as an example for their own projects

It is useless to dream of a 2CV custom scene as big as the VW scene, it will never happen because now, we have none of the 5 things listed.

There is one major advantage to having not so much showcars: it is much easier to build one that is truly unique and original. So get to building, ya lazy pipesmoking f***s!

Hmm..

First, 2cv custom scene will never grow as big as VW scene. I dont think
no one is dreaming about that here. Guestion was that 2cv show cars can
be count whit fingers of 2 hands. Even if 2cv is cheap and hippy car there
still is place for many more show quality vehicles. As long thinking is that
2cv always should be hippy-meeting-drinking-smoking-vehicle there will
not be so much more show quality cars that we have seen. In 2cv meeting
you cant even clean your rims that someone comes to ask: "what you are
doing". That sucks too.

Second, dont mix here words TUNING and SHOW CAR, SHOW CAR does
NOT mean 17" wheels, sparco bucket seats, tuning air filter etc. SHOW
car can be whit original rims, original style interior, Its just well thinked
and designed modifications and quality work. Example of cheap and good
2cv show vehicle could be: Channeled, nice paint job, nice tyres and
Stardust moon disks and well detailed, far away from tuning but still could
be really amazing car, and best of all quite CHEAP to built.

And about thenical modifications, they are not manytimes SHOW stuff.
If I would have 3 turbos in my 2cv I would not think its show car, even
that it sure will be special. Ofcourse if rest of car would be nicely made
I could take it on show and open the hood.

I dont like Tuning cars that much that I ever would like to make one, but
I still think those 2cv Tuning cars are good thing for 2cv scene. There is
not so much youth in 2cv hobby and for me that is much better way to
built 2cv than glue flower stickers and put deltamics under it. They spend
money and they make well quality cars in their own style. 90% of 2cv's
are super close to regular so I wish there would be even more and more
tunings as well GOOD SNAILS. There is place for all of them.

For HOT parts 2cv scene is kind a only missing GOOD rims. There is
example VW rims to make fit in 2cv but even that seem to be difficult.
Everything else can be easily made out of existing parts. Show vehicles
never are colletion of bolt on accesories (exept in usa Wink ).

There's very few there that i actually like. I can appreciate the work that's gone into them, it just the 'styles' Laughing that get used are Embarassed .

It's a fact of life that most 2cv people have pretty bad taste!

About rims, some of you talk about VW rims for their 2cvs, I can understand where you are coming from, but the VW rims shown (some even on 2cv's) do not really suit the car... most of them look brilliant on a beetle, but they look sort of a bit too big/fat on a 2cv...
In fact that is probably the problem for those who want different rims...

Moreover, what is good or bad taste and what is than snail proof Question would that be a car which can represent the forum on a show? In that case there are more for example Kustombart's woody should be in your list to and there is more on the burner here and there.

I really liked this one, which I saw on a dutch meeting two years ago.

My list is about 2cv's which are made in SHOW guality, not list of cars
what I like most or what are most Snail proof. Snail is standing for
Classical custom/hot rod styled 2cv's, so lining is guite easy to make.
What looks good or not is baced about classical custom beauty images
and pure Design facts. That car Bartje shows is not Show quality car.
I dont get what you mean that VW rims are fat for 2cv. In front they are
usually having as narrow tyres as 2cv's originals. I think DeltaMics are
guite much more fat in 2cv.

Well I wasn't so much aware of the size of the rims, cause that is just as original so fatness is not so much about the tyres. My point is also more about what they look like on a 2cv. When I see this picture:

I must say in this case they doesn't look too bad (so it isn't a great example of what I mean, but couldn't find a better one quickly), but can't honestly say they really suit this car. It is obviously a matter of feeling so difficult to define, but I'd call them a bit too fat or big. So they don't show so well here as where these rims look brilliant on a VW T1 van.

Okay, well I don't want to annoy you guys, with probably stupid questions. I must admit I'm not so much into design and classic custom, hotrod and so on, although I have obviously seen some things here and there. But what is than "classical custom beauty" and how should that be related to a 2cv? And what are these pure design facts?
All in all I can sort of see where you're coming from, but it ain't clear either, which it probably can't be Rolling Eyes Laughing Wink .

About this car what Bartje shows, I get that its guite new built but why
Its have to been made in 80's 90's style (colors, wheels, scalloops) which
was not maybe most cool after all.

Barts TikiWoody is cool car but finishing of it is more made for heavy
using than show.

Classical custom beauty is taking ideas of custom cars what have been
mention to be beatiful in time by getting awards in shows or being
inteviewed in magazines. All this you can get to learn by following
custom/hotrod/2cv etc. scene for years. About Desing facts/propotions
you can study some years in school or get to know basics by some books
or reading from internet.

If you made how ever good work and get your car on shows and you
dont never get any award you can maybe think that your car is A)
out of style B) bad design.

ps. I think those wheels (rims and tyres) in that blue 2cv are best in any
2cv ever.
