I bought this car recently. One owner from new, never welded, never painted. No perforating rust, and behind the ugly seat covers hide perfectly preserved bright red seats. Mechanics requires work, front end is all loose, the engine leaks oil everywhere and no brakes. I plan to leave it as it is, just rustproofing the floors and chassis, lowering and sort out the mechanics.

@olli - it's cimos, but I think early models don't differ from french ones. in yugoslavia at that time, taxes were high for foreign cars, so some manufacturers claimed cars to be 'made in yugoslavia' so that they could sell them without import taxes, but in reality the cars were just assembled from original parts. as far as I know, cimos started producing cars for real from early seventies on.

the car has one area of concern - windshield surround panel. it doesn't look good from the outside, and it'll probably be worse when I remove the windshield. the thing is, I'd really like to keep the original faded paint, so I'll try to brass-weld the holes instead of replacing the whole panel.

Save yourself a lot of work and do it right. As you said, the inside is probably worse, that's where the rust is coming from. Weld it now and you can do the same next year. Better to replace it and have new paint mixed in the colour of your car. A good carpaint store can add matting agent to match the shine of the faded paint. Or you can sand the new paint with a scotchbrite pad until it is as matt as the old paint.

is scotchbrite pad the thing that you normally wrap the sanding paper around?
I once sanded my car with 2000 wet-paper to make it matt. was pretty all right, although I revealed the primer at some locations.

The best thing about scotchbrite is that is sands without taking too much paint off. I use it when I have to paint over old layers and I don't want the risk of sanding through the old paint.
