@ Olli: That's the idea. 39 year old scratched, faded and crumbling black with shiny, sparkly Monster Green. Adding some white and grey pinstripes, later.

@Bjorn: I'm trying to. If nothing goes wrong I can just make it in time.

Today I put on 18 coats of paint on the roof of the monster. First dark green metallic, then fine green flakes, then big green flakes. Then lots of clearcoat.

Tomorrow 6 more layers of clear and I'll put in a fade to very dark green on the edges.

After the weekend some wet sanding and a few more layers of clear. I hope the paint will harden enough to start polishing before friday...

Can't wait to see it uncovered.

I believe silver flakes with colour candy are the best way to go for deeep deep effects...

Whit color flakes you get most "authentic" 60's look. Silver flakes whit color
candy are more easy way to do flake job. Whit color flakes you need to be
carefull that you dont sand them broken, then they became silver and it looks
no good. I prefere look of color flakes.

Actually spraying Candy evenly on such a big surface is really difficult. If you pass over the same spot twice the paint is thicker and you get a dark spot. Also, moving the spray gun too slow or too fast results in too light or too dark band.

Today I sprayed a fade to dark green on the edges and more clear to cover up the flakes. Monday I'll probably do another 6 coats of clear and then they will be buried.

After the 30th layer today I pulled of the tape to see how it looks.

Tomorrow wet-sanding to see if the flakes are all covered.

I bought a 1:43 model to visually check some kustom modifications I am planning. I already made fenderskirts, lowered it, shaved the door trim, removed the front blinker lights, made the rear lights smaller and extended the fins over the taillights. Also I stretched the rear bumper out (the parts that go around the side of the car).

Considering the clutch is worn out and gearbox bearings too, it's great. There's lots of torque all the way through the revs, so when you give it some stick, it really goes. Another great thing is that you can do everything from walking pace to 110 km/h in third gear.

I had 150 on the speedo for a short while, it seemed as quiet and steady as 100 kms and there was still room under the loud pedal. It's quite stable and well mannered, except in slow, tight corners. There's not enough weight on the front wheels and the rear wheels just push it straight on when you hit the throttle. I am used to that from my rear engined Skoda Rapid. I am still playing with tire pressures, which affect handling in a big way. The more weight is in the car (it seats 6 people in comfort), the better it seems to behave.

I had a hint of oversteer coming out of a corner, accelerating full on. The back end just stepped out of line for a moment but was easily corrected by a twist of the steering wheel. I need to be aware of that in the wet....

There is a great big vibration under heavy braking. I need to replace two brake drums, one is oval and another has a deep groove in the brake surface.

The sound is just awesome. V8 Burbling along in third at 50kms, growling when accelerating out of a roundabout, untill it starts to scream at 80, through to 110. That just puts a big stupid grin on my face.

congratulations, you got a pretty cool car.

unfortunately the bottrop organizers were too blinkered. every ugly beetle with shiny paint and chromed rims was allowd to enter the location.
actually those big new hummer trucks were allowed to stay there.

but those organizer assholes said: car is too young and not custom car

i think everyone else was fascinated. :)

i'm shure next time they let you pass bart, because it's older than 65' :)
